Optimizing Canadian Health Care for the Future – Canadian Provinces Take Measures

May 06
02:43 2022

May 5, 2022 – Ontario – Canada is often viewed as one of the best places to live in the world because its health care system is modern and it provides effective service for all citizens. However, some improvements need to be made especially the ones that came to light post Covid. There are already a number of provinces that have taken measures towards optimizing Canadian health care for the future by introducing new initiatives that improve efficiency and accessibility.

National and provincial medical bodies are seen to discuss and implement solutions to work through some of the issues including growing shortages for all health care providers, including physicians that are affecting Canada and the world.

Ontario’s Plan for Better Health Care

Ontario has released Prescription for Ontario: Doctors’ 5-Point Plan for Better Health Care.

This report is a roadmap of realistic and achievable recommendations to fix the gaps in our health-care system.

5 Priorities were identified in the report as ways to improve the delivery of health care in Ontario

  • Reduce wait times and the backlog of services

  • Expand mental health and addiction services in the community

  • Improve home care and other community care

  • Strengthen public health and pandemic preparedness

  • Give every patient a team of health-care providers and link them digitally

What Ontario has done and plans to do echoes the conversations that are happening across Canada in the healthcare sector.

Reinforcing Manitoba’s Health Care System

The Manitoba government’s Budget 2022 plan prioritizes healthcare with a strong plan to reduce diagnostic and surgical backlog, train nurses, strengthen seniors care, and invest in mental health and addictions services.

Canadian Medical Association (CMA)

The 2022 Health Summit Series hosted by the CMA in March was focused on Harnessing our collective will to rebuild health care.

5 key take-aways from the session are to:

  • Build health care so every Canadian has a family doctor

  • Connect all parts of the health system

  • Make it about patients – serving and supporting their needs

  • Ensure cultural safety is a cornerstone of patient care

  • Leverage innovation and creativity to rebuild health care

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)

Federal Budget 2022 Recommendations Summary

Advocating for family medicine, the CFPC recommendations submission calls on the federal government to invest in primary care through its election pledge of $3.2 billion. Proper system infrastructure, appropriate remuneration, increased resources to support team-based models of care, and increased system capacity are urgently needed.

These are just a few examples of recent strides across Canada to move the healthcare system and in turn our health teams, family doctors, specialists, physician assistants, nurses, and patients forward into the future where the results need to change.

It is observed that there are a number of Canadian provinces that have taken active steps towards optimizing health care for the future. These include British Columbia and Ontario, who have both implemented new programs designed to modernize and improve efficiency within the healthcare system. By doing so, they hope to address some of the concerns that have been raised in recent years about the rising cost of healthcare and limited access to services. As more provinces take similar actions, it is likely that the overall quality of Canadian health care will continue to improve, making it one of the best systems in the world.
