Cupertino, California – Sequent Microsystems released on Kickstarter the Learning Kit for Raspberry Pi. The kit is a Raspberry Pi HAT (Hardware on Top) which contains all the common I/O interfaces required for home and industrial automation systems.

Features include:

  • Four optically isolated inputs
  • Two high current relays
  • One 0-10V input
  • One 0-10V output
  • One 4-20mA input
  • One 4-20mA output
  • On-board 10V and 24V power for voltage and current loop interfaces
  • One general-purpose pushbutton
  • Eight LEDs
  • One RS-485 port
  • One proportionally controlled motor driver

The board uses pluggable connectors for ease of wiring and is powered directly by the Raspberry Pi. The LEDs display the status of various inputs, outputs and relays. The motor port introduces the user to the world of robotics.

The project addresses the technically inclined teacher, student or hobbyist who wants to learn about automation, but may have limited programming skills. A comprehensive Node-RED tutorial leads the user step by step from simple “Hello World” projects to building systems that include environmental sensing, device actuation and control loops.  Node-RED is a popular, graphically based language for specifying automated systems and requires no previous programming skills.

Advanced users can control The Learning Kit using the Command Line or Python drivers available on GitHub. The project is open source, and the hardware schematics can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.

The MSRP is $50, with substantial discounts for quantity orders.

“If you have an automation project in mind there is no better place to start than with Node-RED and the standard interfaces available in this Learning Kit. “, explains Dr. Charles Neuhauser, member of Sequent Microsystems’ technical staff and author of the Node-RED tutorial. “The Node-RED system is free, widely used, powerful and best of all, very user friendly.”
