Industry leader Mold Busters reveals latest and critical toxic mold statistics and data in 2021

From toxic mold types found indoors and outdoors to statistics about mold types found in basements and bathrooms, Canada-based Mold Busters reveals the latest data and mold facts that people have to be aware of in 2021.

Industry leader Mold Busters has unveiled data and trends on mold statistics and facts in 2021 aimed at helping homeowners keep an eye out for mold.

With over 15 years of performing air quality samples and mold tests, the Mold Busters team has collected a vast amount of data and combined it to showcase what could be happening with the fungal ecology inside homes.

“We always give our best to improve our knowledge and expertise in the environmental field of science and human society. We also think that sharing this knowledge worldwide is very important in order to make people aware of what are possible threats to our environment, as well as how to prevent or resolve them,” says Michael, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Mold Busters.

The organization’s certified inspectors have collected air samples from Southern Ontario to Eastern Ontario and all of Western Quebec as part of its mold testing services.

“The result has been an incredible collection of mold spore concentrations, broken down by genus, as it relates to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions,” explains Michael.

Mold Busters reported that the most common toxic mold types found in homes were the Penicillium/Aspergillus group (38%), Chaetomium (17%), Stachybotrys (16%), and Alternaria (9%).

Meanwhile, the most common toxic mold types found outdoors were the Penicillium/Aspergillus group (53%), Alternaria (17%), Chaetomium (4%), and Stachybotrys (2%).

The Penicillium/Aspergillus group, for instance, is the most common mold spore species that develop in indoor air samples. The majority of the hundreds of sub-species are allergenic.

On the other hand, the Alternaria species are also common allergens in humans. These plant pathogens commonly cause hay fever or hypersensitivity reactions that, in some cases, lead to asthma.

Mold Busters says in its process of providing recommendations for mold removal, it doesn’t matter if there is one spore or 1 billion spores of toxigenic species.

“We always give suggestions for mold remediation. Homeowners are safe only when there is no toxic mold spore found indoor,” explains Michael.

If they are higher indoors than outdoors, Michael says it’s considered elevated, and recommendations can be made, ranging from improving ventilation, remediation/disinfection, or general cleaning.

Mold Busters was established in 2005 in Canada at a time when awareness about the health effects of mold was lacking.

“We knew what it felt like to work in a contaminated environment, and we wanted to help others who were having the same issue. Mold Busters rose to the challenge of improving quality of life through quality of service,” says Michael.

Since then, the organization has devoted everything to learning about mold, bacteria, asbestos, ventilation, and water damage. It hustled to become the best in the industry—Ottawa’s decontamination experts.
