At international schools in Shanghai, there is a tradition to celebrate Christmas every year. In Wellington College, the school along with the Friends of Wellington, arrange numerous seasonal activities to celebrate this festive time of year. Let’s see how Wellington arranged its Christmas events and celebrations this year.

What’s Christmas without a tree to act as the focal point for the festivities? It began to feel Christmassy at this Shanghai school in early December at what has become an annual Wellington Christmas tradition – the lighting of the tree on the College Esplanade. The Friends of Wellington served mulled wine, hot chocolate, and home-baked cookies while the school choir led the evening with carols by candlelight.

Besides the tree lighting, student’s performances are another highlight of the Christmas celebration. Every year children together with teaching staff prepare and showcase fabulous performances. This year’s Nursery performance was an array of Christmas songs focused on the joy of Christmas and sharing with families. It featured the main characters of the festive season, including Rudolph and Santa Claus. The Reception children’s performances reminded the audience all about the importance of sharing and working together through activities like building a snowman. All of the children worked very hard on learning the lyrics of their class songs and enjoyed dancing together with their friends and teachers in this Shanghai school. 

Reception to Pre-Prep children are all fully engaged in the performances and preparation under the guidance offered by the experienced teachers in this Shanghai school. When year 1 took to the stage, they told the story of Apple the pony, who found a mysterious hat! She had lots of help from her fellow farm animals to find out which season was best for her hat with wonderful songs and well-rehearsed and delivered lines. Year 2 then took the stage for their performance of I’m Gonna Shine which was a dazzling musical that followed the origins of the nativity Christmas story. All the attendees including parents and teaching staff enjoyed the chilren’s performances.

Performances at Wellington College Shanghai’s school aim to get children involved and engaged as this is also an amazing opportunity for children to enhance their performing art, oracy, communications, expression, and social skills which are key elements of the curriculum offered at Wellington.
