A Chemistry Book for Toddlers, new fun chemistry book for toddlers live on Kickstarter

Who said chemistry is too hard for little kids? An Indiana-based chemist/mom/educator, Stephanie Ryan, has recently launched a new innovative chemistry book on Kickstarter that will teach science to toddlers in a fun, playful way through games and everyday examples. Titled “Let’s Learn about Chemistry: A Chemistry Book for Toddlers,” the new book is a board book for kids aged 0+ and aims to instill the basics of scientific practices and concepts of chemistry from an early age.

The campaign is geared to raise around $18,000 by August 16, 2019.

“Let’s Learn about Chemistry: A Chemistry Book for Toddlers” is strategically designed with colorful illustrations and fun facts to engage children. It introduces various chemistry concepts to kids by asking them to find similarities and differences in common everyday toys while subtly introducing chemistry vocabulary and images. The objects are specifically designed to have other visual similarities so that children can make other comparisons too.

Ryan’s new chemistry board book for toddlers was inspired by a real-life experience with her son, Charlie. While playing one day, he began sorting his toys by similarities and describing differences in them. The toys were all the same shape but different colors. In observing him, Ryan realized that there are various chemistry concepts in everyday life that are based on categorical descriptions and they can be shown to kids at an earlier age. The realization motivated her to pen the new book which can introduce these basic chemistry concepts to toddlers from a tender age and through a fun, engaging learning environment. Thus, Let’s Learn about Chemistry: A Chemistry Book for Toddlers” was born.

“As a chemistry educator and a mom, I have always wanted to introduce the basic concepts of chemistry from an earlier age to keep the wonder and appeal of science alive. There are multiple concepts in general chemistry which involve categorical descriptions and hence are easily understandable for kids if presented at their level. I have been searching for the baby book space for appropriate science books, but none of them seemed to cover the science concepts utilizing natural tendencies of children to compare things which are different and similar. It inspired me to come up with a new chemistry book for toddlers that will acquaint little ones about fundamentals of chemistry and honing their scientific practices, capitalizing on their natural tendencies to make the learning more effective”, stated Ryan.

“The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have moved molecular level thinking to earlier grades than high school, but this book introduces the concept even earlier and through playful learning.”

The book is themed on a game which is played by Charlie and three of his childhood friends- Elizabeth, Lydia, and Oscar. Each of them has to take turns by guessing and explaining all through the book in a way that fosters learning.

Ryan has specifically chosen the “board book” format to ensure lasting durability for the piece. She plans to print the book using a US based printer and including a “Made in the USA” stamp on the cover.

“We are finished with the writing and most of the illustrations. The only changes left to the content are to incorporate some feedback we were given from parents and librarians to make the book even more interactive. Now, we are looking forward to publishing it, and that’s an expensive affair. On top of that, there are myriad additional costs including costs for professional editing, purchase of ISBN & bar code, printing and so on. This demands a robust financial backup and hence this Kickstarter campaign. Your generous support will enable us to bring this book to life and teach our kids chemistry and science skills from an early age.”

Backers will be rewarded with copies of the book, discounts on classroom sets of the upcoming book, exclusive invitations to live reading sessions, and so on.
